Six years ago, the world embraced the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), of which South Pacific Brewery (SPB) took on board, to safeguard our environment.
SPB, through parent company HEINEKEN, recently launched a 2030 Sustainability Strategy.
The Sustainability Strategy aims to support the delivery of the UN SDGs. Out of the 17 SDGs, SPB’s focus is in nine areas:
- Good Health & Well-being
- Gender Equality
- Clean Water & Sanitation
- Affordable & Clean Energy
- Decent Work & Economic Growth
- Industry, Innovation & Infrastructure
- Sustainable Cities & Communities
- Responsible Consumption & Production
- Partnerships for the Goals
As a society, great progress has been made, however, the technological advances, improved standard of living and population increase comes at a cost:
- Increased greenhouse gas emissions (GHG)
- Destruction of biodiversity
- Increased scarcity of natural resources, including water
- Growing inequality, between rich and poor
By rolling out key activities in the UN SDGs, SP Brewery’s ambition is to create a more inclusive, fair and sustainable world.
Sustainable Development simply aims to find a coherent and viable equilibrium, in the long term between; preservation of the environment, people’s well-being and development of society. Combined with the economic pillar, this equilibrium will lead to and equitable and sustainable growth.
Our survival as a business depends on the future sustainability of our people and communities. We know we can only thrive if the planet and our communities thrive.
Over the past six years, great results have been achieved, however, a great deal still needs to be accomplished in the coming years, hence the UN has organised a second edition of the flag action: “Together for the SDGs” on September 24th and 25th 2021 – days the SDG Action Day takes place.
By hoisting the SDG flag, organizations, municipalities, companies, civil society organizations, schools and the government show that they are part of this global movement.
Prime Minister James Marape is currently attending the 76th UN Climate Conference (COP26) in New York, United States of America. The Prime Minister made known his intention to ask industrialized nations, to do more and to work together with communities affected by deforestation and climate change to find a viable and sustainable way forward to achieve the SDG’s as well as the Paris Accord, without compromising the development aspirations of developing country, especially the smaller Island States.
In Papua New Guinea, SPB joins in on this action as its’ commitment to ensuring greener, more inclusive economies and stronger, more resilient societies.
